Lesson #9 - Advanced Stalls & Incipient Spins, Lesson #10 - Practise Forced Landings & Lesson #11 - Steep Turns It's been a little while since I wrote, so this is what I've been up to...
after my last post, I had a lesson on Advanced Stalls/Incipient Spins & then one on Forced Landings & very importantly, what can cause them (as prevention is better than cure right?!). My instructor & I then went up & he showed me the procedures for forced landings & did what's called a 'practise forced landing' or PFL. For those who don't know what one does when doing a PFL, there's certain checks that need to be carried out (not missing any), simulated mayday call, passenger brief etc. The instructor then had me do 2 PFL's, then the weather closed in, so we made our way back to the airport.
The next lesson I had was more PFL's & also steep turns (turning at a 45 degree angle of bank), and let me tell you, I had a shocker of a day!! I was a big fatigued & just wasn't with it, hence I didn't perform very well at all! I can honestly tell you that I learned a heck of a lot from that experience though.
The next lesson was this Saturday just past & you guessed it, more PFL's & steep turns! I made a concerted effort to study hard to memorise the procedures (even simulating them while driving the car - just to get it locked into my head). Needless to say I was rearing & ready to go, to demonstrate to my instructor that I knew them, & knew them well. This I did! (He was very relieved I think)
Next lesson will be a check ride with the instructor to do some steep turns & then he feels confident to send me solo in the training area - this means flying solo AWAY from the circuit! At first this doesn't sound so bad does it? It didn't to me, but the penny dropped in the last few lessons when my instructor has said absolutely nothing after making the decision to fly back to the airfield... no assistance on radio calls, flightpath, entering the circuit, landing... nothing! He trains the same way I do, throw em' in to the deep end, boots & all! (but don't worry too much, if he forsee's me do anything stupid, rest assured he'll stop me).

I am at the same stage as you now, the next lesson would be my area solo, or crosswind circuits as I need to continue practicing those (there have not been many crosswinds at moorabbin of late).
Joining downwind for 17R from Carrum really threw me as I had not done any circuits on the western runway (you ain't allowed to anyway!) so that preoocupied me for sometime, apparently I did quite well with the GAAP procedure and my instructor was happy to send me out on a solo the next time, that was my checkride done (the last lesson I returned from the training area from GMH with no assistance)!
It's finally dawned on me that I am halfway there.....
