Saturday was a beautiful day here in Toowoomba. I was all lined up for a 3pm lesson, showed up to the Aero Club (hoping for crosswinds as there was a bit of a northerly), only to open the door where I saw one of the Grade 1 instructors talking to one of the Grade 3 instructors (the one which I was going out with).  The Grade 1 (Ray) turned to me & said, "going solo in the training area today are we Damien?". To which I responded, "I was hoping for some crosswinds". They laughed at me & Grade 1 told Grade 3 to do a couple of PFL's with me & if I was ok to send me out on my own.  So that was that.

Pre-flight, runup & radio calls, as usual were done my me & then off we went.  We got over the training area (low flying field) & the instructor reduced throttle to idle, so I went ahead (instinctively - he types puffing his chest out in pride - jokes) and followed the procedures I'd been trained on, & lets face it, I've had plenty of practise on it over the past months.  On climb out the instructor paid me a nice compliment & told me to fly back to the airfield.

After landing & filling out the required paperwork, off I went.  All on my own again in an aircraft, although this time I got to fly away from the circuit! I loved it! Being the only person in the cockpit, with a purpose, made for some very treasured time.

The circuit was very busy on the way out & I was kept on my toes with situational awareness, but felt I coped well.

Upon landing & then filling out more paperwork for the training record, both instructors asked me how I went, so I gave a debrief, asked them a few questions about circuit procedures to find out if what I did was correct - which it was, and then booked my next lesson, then went home.

What I am spewing about is that I forgot to take the voice recorder... oh well, next time.
